In the last few years mental health research has shown growth in numbers of people suffering from social anxiety and depression. Whether that is linked with the growth of population and the increasing need of spaces where one can be alone, it is not clear. However, the matter of dealing with the issue becomes more pressing every day.

Recent research shows that small interventions in one’s daily life can help coping with the anxiety of being in social surroundings.

‘Hide & Seek’ is a series of installations in Cumbernauld community park that aim to provide such space where one can escape even just for the seconds it takes to get from one side to the other. With the use of natural materials, gradient light and privacy the objective is to propose spaces that, by using the five senses, provide a hiding place for those who seek a short escape from the overwhelming surroundings.

The journey begins with the Sight Tower. The 30-meter-high tower is a beacon, that can be seen from the town center. Balconies provide views towards the hills, let you observe the urban environment, and give a glimpse of the journey ahead.

Next is the Sound Path. The route takes you through the highest point of the park, letting you be enveloped by nature. A hexagonal timber structure completes the land above you. Foliage hides you from curious eyes, while speakers let you experience enhanced sounds of nature.

The Touch Hive is the third element. Planters are following a path made of different materials such as pebbles, sand and grass.
The fourth installation is the Scent Triangle. Lavender bushes, vines and thyme let you dive in a symphony of scents. Solitary benches let you enjoy the experience alone, hidden from the crowd.

Last is the Taste Cathedral - 40-meter-high arches, supporting a glazed envelope, let you stroll through the paths protected by the weather. Two ponds reflect the arches and the sky like mirrors. The temperature-controlled environment provides excellent space for an urban garden.
