easternfuturism: An Alternate Synthesis

The space chosen for the project is a part of the I.O.R. Park in Bucharest, an unkempt portion of an otherwise quite successful park at the core of the Titan neighbourhood. As example of the continual erosion of public space in the post-communist city, it stands at the moment to become a mall.

Instead of that, the project imagines a different resolution for this space: a place where people can rediscover all the activities one would do in tighter knit communities of old but adapted to life in a zoned, urban context such as Titan. This is imagined in the form of a collective, evolving from 3 separate buildings dedicated to specific activities (growing, making and learning) into one long building which sits in the space of the city as a force equally capable of change as its communist context. Each of the buildings serves as an incubator for larger transformation within the community and the city: enabling people to grow vegetables in the gardens or roofs of their blocks of flats, creating spaces where people can create and express themselves, providing shared resources and a place where people can connect beyond their contextual acquaintances. The unification of all these buildings serves a dual role as it administers and creates the ordered public context as well as places and situations where conflict and criticism can occur.

An image of an alternate synthesis starts to emerge: a hopeful world flourishing from the unfulfilled gaps of a failed world.
