We Are Data; The Data Cooperative
We live in a world of data. Over 3.8 billion people are online, by 2020 every person on earth will be generating 1.7MB of data every second of every day. Data has been called the oil of the 21st century, a driver of prosperity. But what does this really mean for our everyday lives? Data is
everywhere; we produce it daily. 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated globally per day with 90% of the world’s data produced in the last two years.
With growing technology many people are deciding to become more transparent, a trade- off where they are choosing technology and convenience over their right to privacy. What is an acceptable trade-off? For the general public the extent of companies data analysis may be unclear, this raises the question who owns “our” data and if companies are profiting from it, can we?
We Are Data - The Data Cooperative aims to empower individuals to regain control over their data, understand the power it holds and reap the financial benefit of this growing industry. The Data Cooperative operates as a business and as such will collaborate with various local bodies to shape Glasgow's future and provide a space for innovation open to entrepreneurs with The Data Cooperative being a resource for City. There lies great potential in data, We Are Data aims to pave the way for ethical data collection.
